IONCOR
Modernizing battery production
When IONCOR needed to modify the battery production line at its plant in Uusikaupunki, Finland, they contracted Prevas. The 18-month project prepared for the production of a new type of battery while showcasing Prevas’ expertise in industrial automation and project management.
A complex line modification project
IONCOR offers the customers in bus and truck, off-highway and automotive segments advanced battery systems and services that support their transition towards electrified solutions. At the Uusikaupunki battery plant, IONCOR produces high-quality battery systems for the needs of the automotive and other industries.
The scope of the project was extensive, requiring production line redesign, project management, installation supervision, electrical automation planning, electrical installation, automation system development, and programming of 35 KUKA industrial robots.
“This project demonstrated the importance of in-depth technical expertise and effective project management in complex industrial modifications,” says Juha Palmén, Vice President, Automation at Prevas. “The seamless integration of various technical elements – from robotics to automation systems – while maintaining production quality standards made this project particularly noteworthy.”

High Technology and Precision
Battery production requires precision and expertise, setting high standards also for the equipment suppliers. The project used advanced technology in both equipment and systems, requiring specialized knowledge in several areas. Advanced automation systems, industrial robotics, quality control processes, and safety protocols all played critical roles in the successful implementation.
Ensuring quality through communication
Communication and project management proved essential to the success of the project. Prevas implemented a structured communication framework that included regular weekly meetings with the IONCOR team and collaboration sessions with key stakeholders. During the critical installation and commissioning phase, daily site meetings ensured smooth progress and quick resolution of any challenges.
The technical implementation focused on ensuring that all equipment met the new battery specifications, while optimizing the performance of the automation system and adapting robot programming to the new requirements. Maintaining quality standards and minimizing risk in the production processes remained paramount throughout the changeover process.

Close Collaboration Secured the Right Results
Quality assurance was maintained through continuous project steering group oversight and regular progress monitoring against established objectives. Systematic quality control procedures and close cooperation with IONCOR’s quality team ensured that all modifications met the required standards.
“Based on IONCOR’s initial specifications and goals, we delivered a fully modified production line capable of producing a different type of battery while maintaining the required quality standards,” says Juha Palmén.
"In collaboration with Prevas, process development and production design projects such as the one at the Uusikaupunki battery plant have been successful for IONCOR. Consequently, we are grateful for Prevas for their dedication, co-operation, and competences," says Juhani Kettunen, Director Operations, IONCOR.
