Improved safety at Kemira Chemicals’ loading station

A successful modernization project at Kemira Chemicals Oy’s Joutseno plant has significantly improved the safety and efficiency of its loading stations. The project, led by Prevas, addressed a critical safety challenge while maintaining continuous operations throughout the implementation.

Comprehensive safety-first approach

The existing loading station presented safety concerns, particularly regarding access to tanker trucks. Workers faced potential fall hazards when accessing the top of the tanker, and the layout created inefficiencies in the loading process. A key requirement was to maintain at least one operational loading station throughout the upgrade to ensure business continuity.

The project began with a detailed preliminary design phase that outlined new fall protection structures and necessary modifications to the existing loading area.

“We focused on tailoring safety structures and equipment specifically for chemical loading and unloading stations”, says Jyri Halkola, Director of Prevas’ South-East Business Unit. “The challenge was to integrate these new safety features into the existing infrastructure.”

The solution included the implementation of fall protection systems that meet SFS-EN ISO 14122-3 standards for maintenance platforms, redesigned access points for improved ergonomics, upgraded piping and foundations, and new steel structures optimized for safety and efficiency.

Careful planning and coordination

The success of the project depended on careful planning and coordination between all parties involved. A detailed schedule was developed with Kemira Chemicals, and daily communication ensured minimal disruption to operations.

“Long-term planning was critical. Major schedule changes were communicated more than a month in advance and confirmed at least a week before implementation”, says Jyri Halkola.

Several key components worked together during the implementation phase. The team established precise contractor agreements and scope definitions from the outset, ensuring clear accountability throughout the project. The site operated under comprehensive safety protocols, including a robust work permit system, weekly safety walks and specialized safety training for all personnel. The team conducted thorough risk assessments prior to each phase of work, and strict access control measures were maintained throughout the project.

The challenge was to integrate these new safety features into the existing infrastructure.

A safer, more efficient operation

The upgraded loading station successfully addressed key safety concerns while improving operational efficiency. The new safety structures have minimized fall risks and created a more ergonomic work environment, demonstrating how safety improvements can go hand in hand with operational improvements.

“This project is an example of a successful industrial upgrade where safety, efficiency and operational continuity can be achieved through careful planning and execution”, says Jyri Halkola.
