Sustainable foundry sand recycling: Resand Oy’s journey to market
Resand Oy, based in Nuutajärvi, Finland, is a leading developer of innovative solutions for foundry sand recycling and regeneration. Resand’s patented thermomechanical process allows foundries to reuse up to 90 percent of their sand, leading to significant cost savings and reduced waste disposal. To prepare for entry into the European market, they partnered with Prevas to overcome technical challenges and ensure regulatory compliance.
Scalable innovation – driven by sustainability
Resand Oy, formerly known as FinnRecycling Oy, had already developed groundbreaking equipment for cleaning foundry sand. With sustainability as the core driver, they sought to transform their prototype into a market-ready solution. The Prevas team collaborated closely with Resand engineers throughout the project, incorporating their feedback into the design.
“We provided additional personnel for product development and mechanical design as the first gas-powered sand reclaimer prototype was redesigned as a larger production model,” says Katri Laine, Project Manager at Prevas. “Also, introducing new technology to the European market requires strict compliance with regulations. Our expertise was used to ensure compliance with EU machinery safety requirements, including strength calculations, risk assessments, and instruction manuals for the machinery.”

Technical Excellence and Regulatory Compliance
The Prevas team meticulously gathered the necessary documentation for CE marking, providing Resand with comprehensive information on the machinery’s CE marking process. Prevas also produced user manuals and other necessary documentation, like detailed strength calculations for machine lifecycle. This included calculations for various transportation and installation scenarios, ensuring the safe handling of sand reclaimers for end customers in Finland and across Europe.
“One of the more challenging design issues involved addressing the high internal temperature of the device,” says Katri Laine. “The selection of an appropriate design for the heating parts was made in close cooperation with the customer. We successfully combined customers’ user experiences with the prototype machine, and manufacturing requirements with our expertise in strength calculations and design to come up with the best solution for demanding environments.”
We ensured EU machinery safety compliance through calculations, risk assessments, and clear documentation.

Ongoing partnership and innovation
In addition to providing essential technical support, Prevas has been instrumental in facilitating end customer modifications for the supplied models, ensuring seamless integration and optimal performance.
“Resand Oy has been cooperating for years with Prevas in bringing new innovative sustainable foundry sand reclaiming technology to the market,” says Jarkko Partinen, CTO off Resand Oy. “Prevas has quickly adopted to our needs and supported us throughout the development with their wide range of engineering and documentation competences.”
The collaboration has expanded to include end-customer modifications, transportation solutions, and installation support across Finland and Europe. In 2024, the partnership evolved further with the development of the first electrically driven sand reclaimer, marking another milestone in sustainable foundry solutions.
