Klabin
Advancing sustainable paper production in cooperation with Klabin
Klabin, Brazil’s largest producer and exporter of packaging paper and sustainable paper solutions, has successfully developed its new paper mill which produces a full range of pulp, paper and board products, in the southern Brazilian state of Paraná. Andritz Inc., a leading global supplier of industrial process equipment and systems, selected Prevas for this strategic project based on its proven expertise in solutions for the pulp and paper industry.
Close collaboration for robust solutions – from blueprint to operation
The scope included comprehensive design of high- and low-pressure piping systems for recovery and power boilers for Klabin's greenfield pulp mills. The project decision was reinforced by Prevas strong track record in similar installations and its established professional relationship with Andritz's US-based design leadership team, which enabled seamless communication and alignment with the project requirements.
The comprehensive scope included piping engineering using AVEVA plant model data service (PMDS), piping layout engineering, fabrication and erection drawings, piping stress and strength calculations, and pipe support drawings. The project encompassed 27,800 meters of total piping length.
“Our engineering team’s two decades of experience in boiler plant piping design enabled accurate project pricing and minimized the need for later adjustments,” says Juha Kortessalo, Project manager at Prevas, who oversaw the implementation, communication, and reporting of the boiler piping design.

Technical specifications and integration
The installation features an Andritz Herb Recovery Boiler with a combustion capacity of 3,300 tons of dry solids per day, operating at high steam parameters of 103 bar (absolute pressure) and 502 degrees Celsius to maximize power generation. The system incorporates energy-efficient flue gas cooling and feed water preheating technology for optimal steam production.
The power boiler, utilizing Andritz EcoFluid Bubbling Fluidized Bed (BFB) technology, includes a biomass-fired boiler with flue gas cleaning and auxiliary equipment. Both boilers are integrated into a unified “boiler island” with shared auxiliary systems.
“The project’s tight schedule and broad scope presented significant challenges,” notes Juha Kortessalo. “While initial data gaps posed challenges to our planning schedule, the project was completed on time and met the customer’s quality expectations.”
